I have a 2000 cherokee and heard a blowing sound coming out of the vacuum canister behind the battery. What is this canister called, and what does it do? Also, what could be causing this problem? Was thinking a hole in the canister or something.

Isn't that the reservoir for the cruise control vacuum?

On mine a vacuum line runs along the top of the fenderwell behind the battery and through the metal support behind the headlight/in front of the battery. The "ball" is mounted in that area.

If you hear a noise it should be "sucking in" not "blowing out". Does your cruise control work? Does the heat/air switch from floor to dash to defrost as it should? I had a vacuum leak (my son set the battery down on the hose and mashed it/cracked it and it finally started leaking and even through the cruise control light would come on it would not "go into" cruise control and the only place the air would come out was the dash/defrost vents. A small piece of rubber tubing placed on the line to bridge the gap left by the broken tube fixed the cruise control and the heat/ac floor/vent/defrost switching issue.

That "Football" as its called is for the heat, defroster and vent when you accelerate it keeps the right vent working...Tj
