I think it may be for a fog light option or something but I'm not quite sure, if you know what it is please tell me. And if it is supposed to be plugged in and it's very important then where should it go?

My 2000 XJ has several plugs to nowhere. I know two are for the front fog lamps, one for the mirror termperature sensor, one for the daytime running light resistor and a few which I have yet to figure out.
Get the factory service manual for your XJ and look at the wiring diagrams.

I have a similar plug and have no idea what it is. I also have a thread about it and got no where. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/xj-...nnector-56442/

If you figure it out be sure and post it up here.

I asked because your loose connector looks like the connector for a cruise control servo. I have cruise, and my connector to the servo comes from the same location that yours appears to come from. Since these wiring harnesses are "universal", it could be like everyone else is saying: a connector for an accessory or option you don't have, and I'm betting it's for the cruise.

You probably are right. But, there was another guy who had this same wire but his was back by the fuse box instead of the battery. He had cruise control and it worked but his wire was also disconnected.

Look at the color of the wires coming from the back of this connector. If there is a black, a blue/red, a green/red and a tan/red, it is for the cruise servo. If not, grab a Haynes or Chilton manual (local library) and look thru the electrical diagrams for the chassis and lighting.
