apparently cherokees from 97-01 had a factory undercarriage coating so there's no need to apply the rubber stuff...like the Kind 3M makes..??

Well it's not like the factory stuff will last forever. The newest XJs are now 9 years old, so depending on where you live, undercoat might need a touchup. Especially if you wheel the XJ. For my XJ I shoot it with undercoating or paint every time I see the slightest sign of rust or peeling. And that's often since the rocks do like to gouge under there.

 

I bought mine in late summer 2001. It did not have undercoating. When I asked about the told me they'd spray "sound proofing" on the bottom surfaces and stain proof the seats/carpets, etc. for some dollar amount I don't remember now.

I paid, more for the guarantee on the seats/carpet and then brought it home and went through 2 or 3 cans of "rubberized undercoating" from WalMart to cover all the spots they missed.

Still looks good after almost 10 years.

 

I'm amazed by my '87. It must have NEVER been taken wheeling. I live right by the ocean and no matter where you wheel it's around salt water, even the swamps are brackish, and one of the most popular places to go is Oregon Inlet, right on the beach itself. My old '87 had obviously seen this place PLENTY of times before because it was rusted as hell. My current '87 has essentially NO RUST AT ALL, and still has a good looking coat of undercoating. There is only one small place of rust I see right under the driver's side floor pan, and the only other rust is on the brake calipers/drums, exhaust, and driveshaft - the places that weren't undercoated to begin with. Also, the buildup of grease and road grime on the bottom of the front driveshaft tells me it has hardly ever seen 4wd either.

 

I wish I had undercoated my 1991 XJ when I bought it used from the dealer in Harrisonburg, VA. But I was young and dumb and drove the ever living crap out of it. So bad I had to replace the floorboards in the rear and under the spare tire location.
When I got it on the lift, there was so much crap, rust and what not attached to the bottom it took me hours to just clean and get down to where I could paint undercoating.
I'd definately redo your undercoat if it's been 10 years...
Once my wife's patriot is no longer under warranty I'll undercoat that too.

And yet guys go around here saying they never wash their XJ. That's like a death sentence for the undercarriage. But I guess it' supposed to be a macho thing.

A little secret - women might dig body damage, but we detest dirty vehicles.

 

I was looking at buying a J10 from an old gentlemen and was puzzled by the undercarriage. It was like 1/2" of grease everywhere and he said it was the only way to keep old jeeps from rusting out.

I bought a southern jeep and there is no rust anywhere, ive been undercoating the crap out of it to prepare it for MI winter this yr

I'll never ever let it get that bad again. It was a horrible learning experience.

 

I'm pretty sure the stock 1997-2001 XJS...and all the other new Jeeps have some kind of undercoating called " E Coated ". It's something that's done at the factory when they're finished with all the welding on the frame.
Who the hell knows for sure.....just good to take a few hours and apply the 3m stuff.

Mine has the factory undercoat, but I still "krown" it every year. I have zero rust because of this.
