ummmmmm....electric fan
regarding '1758th thread...', i fell asleep 32 pages in.
sorry.
so here's 1759.
98 xj, runs under 200 degrees. or it did. AC works, when on, temp stayed just over 200, could idle for hours (well not literally) & it never went much over 210
. was sitting the other day for about 15 minutes, heard chime & noticed temp gauge to the red.
so....the electric fan which used to run when AC was clicked on, did not come on. cold, or to over 210, or as hot as i dare to go. the electric fan doesn't turn on.
so, 1st i swapped relay with others in box on fender. jeep starts with any relay in 'that' spot, but the fan never turns on. i pulled the temp sensor plug off the thermostat -still nothing. i disconnected the power plug to the fan on the shroud & hooked directly to battery-again, nothing. in a fit of rage-
-i plugged it back together & spun the electric fan by hand as hard as i could.....& it ran fo
or a good 3-4 minutes.....at varying speeds & kinda wobbly.
SO, if YOU were a 'parts changer' & NOT a 'technician', would YOU just change the electric fan with the thought that it's motor is done?

I'm thinking it might be time for a new fan. I'm not an expert but if it wobbles and will stay on for a short period of time when you spin it, then it probably means its time to replace the fan. I don't know how hard it would be to fix the fan but if I could, I'd replace it. No harm in getting a new fan
after a day at the beach, i was pulling the boat out of the water, & my xj with possible electric fan issues sat at idle as i cranked the boat onto its trailer. ready, i climbed back in, the temp gauge was practically pegged & my oil pressure was about 10 lbs. i dragged the boat out with my xj making lots of funny noises under the hood.
anyway, got it home & there on the front porch was my new electric fan from partsgeek.com. without haste i parked the trailer & had the new fan installed in place of the old one in literally 3 minutes. started the HOT engine & the fan came right on!
so i figured if, as above, i could so scientifically decide to change a part, i'd scientifically test the new fan. in just a few moments the engine temperature dropped all the way to 190-according to the factory guage. 30 minutes later-yes i know, gross waste of fuel-the temp was still under 200 degrees. and oil pressure at idle was well over 20 lbs.
so i guess the fan motor was shot
