I would recommend renting a compression tester from your local Autoparts store and checking compression on all cylinders. Following that i would get your battery tested and hook up a fuel pressure tester to the shrader valve on your fuel rail before a cold start and check to see what your fuel pressure is doing.

Hatch lifts.
Hatch lift mount brakes/spins.
Rear leafs
CPS
NSS
TCU
Leaky injectors
Vac hoses fall off axle
Interior stuff breaking. Anything PO could reach broken. (except shifter)
Driver door thoroughly locked. Plunge cut through door to cut latch pin with saws-all. (access slot no help)
Door falling off
Door pin wear
Signal lever broken
Rear-view now screwed too roof.
Anything a key fits in broken. Hatch lock fell out in a parking lot. Went back easy.
Break fluid from clutch master running out fuse box.
Manifold bolts loosen.
Carb. on the 2.5.....we don't seem to like each-other
2.5 head cracked
rear hatch rattle
brake auto adjusters
disco fork broken
ity-bity drive pin in fuel pump sheared. (stranded Sunday rainstorm)
Rear window fell out once. Didn't brake, put it back.
Wet carpet in rear, cracks at top corners, water runs down inside.
mice love the air filter & glove box (airbox now screened)
rims hold stuff to be out of balance
Headliner actually outlines your head
Both bumpers, all four fenders and all four doors seem to dent. (hood seems sturdy)
Rims can become uncommonly stuck on the rear hub.
Burping the cooling system
Vac ball up behind bumper
Seats don't move, except when PO broke them
indecisive fuel gauge

Normal stuff has been great, or really great!

Overhead console is mentally challenged I swear.

Courtesy lights don't work, cargo light only works when driver side front and rear door are open.
The temp and compass display on the OC don't work.
The clock for whatever reason doesn't work, nothing shows up.
Needs new power lock solenoids.
Needs a new window motor for the driver side rear door.
One of the vent windows or, "window wings", needs a new seal (but no one sells them anymore! )
The power lock switch in the front passenger door is falling out for whatever reason .
And the driver's door has no detent rod (looks like somehow it snapped out while the PO had it) so my door is constantly smacking into me when I'm trying to get in and out of my truck.

don't be intimidated by all of these issues. find an XJ you like and buy it. there were over 170,000 cherokees built in each year of production run, there are bound to be some bugs. also don't forget the last one built was over 10 years ago. Age and mileage are the main factor in many of these issues. fortunately almost every problem you will encounter can be repaired easily in your own driveway, many times in just a few hours. go online by an fsm for your model year and have fun. I would be willing to bet the most of the issues encountered happened around 200,000 mile mark. you should be able to pick 1 up on the low hundred's for just a couple of 1000 dollars

To my knowledge there is no recall on the nss, and the front brakes recall is only if you have factory brakes. If you've replaced them your sol as far as recall replacement goes. My particular Jeep had a recall for the seat belt bolts ripping out of the floor.

I wasn't aware that they had recalls on the NSS but I know for a fact they have recalls on the brake rotors, Brake pedal shift interlock and the o2 sensor, I'm getting all these fixed/replaced for free.

I agree. A lot of the things mentioned in this thread are normal wear parts for vehicles of these ages and mileage.
