Default Two question about AX-15 Transmission

Hello everyone

I had a few questions about my 96 Cherokee's tranny.

1. At what interval should I change my transmission fluid? (5-speed manual) Or do I need to change the fluid at all for AX-15? My car has 171k miles, and I am not sure if this was ever done..

2. I own a factory repair manual and it tells me that I should use 75W-90 or GL-5. But I swear I read somewhere that I should never use GL-5. What's going on?

Use the 75-90 and do it. For the price isn't it worth the piece of mind? All oil breaks down. Won't hurt anything! The interval is less then 170k I'm sure.

Right ... don't use the GL-5. Chrysler has also issued a correction, saying to not use GL-5 in this tranny. GL-5 has additives that corrode the brass synchronizer rings. For example, the manganese sulphonate is transformed by heat and wear and time to become sulfuric acid, which eats up your synchro rings.

Also, the GL-5 is so slippery that the synchros have a hard time lining up, and your shifting will be worse.

For my AX15, I use Redline MT-90, which is a GL-4 synthetic oil that is yellow-metal safe, and has the proper coefficient of friction for Japanese transmissions like the AX15. Most synthetics are NOT yellow-metal safe and don't have the proper coefficient of friction.

My shifting was much better after I put this in there.

If you don't want the expensive stuff, then get regular dino 75W-90 that has a GL-3 or GL-4 specification.

Hey guys -

I was just reading this post this afternoon as I was changing my transmission oil. Originally I had gotten Mobil1 75W-90 LS. After reading this post I ditched the LS and went to look for GL-4. No one had it. I had already drained the fluid (previously ATF), so I had to get something in there. I ended up buying this:

http://www.lucasoil.com/products/dis...id=12&loc=show

Anybody have opinions on this? Should I swap it out with something I order online or is it probably fine?

I will say that before I did the fluid change, I was getting a fair amount of chatter from the transmission if I was stopped, in neutral, and had the clutch engaged (pedal up). That chatter seems to be gone now, but I'm sure that's just due to switching to gear oil from ATF.

Thanks from a new owner.

Not sure if you're talking to Racoon or me. The Lucas oil I got was 75-90, but does not seem to be specifically GL-4.

Don't run that ... it's standard synthetic gear oil. It will be great for your D-30 or D-35 differentials, but not your transmission. It has an additive package that will eventually eat your synchros. Also, your shifting will be notchier because the synchros will not stop spinning fast enough. It might seem good now, compared to the ATF, but get the right stuff and you'll be pleased.

If you don't get the special stuff, look for regular dino 75w-90, not synthetic 75w-90. That will likely be GL-3, which will be just fine for your transmission. That's what was in there when it came out of the factory.

Last recommendation that I heard about(from Chrysler) for the Aisin AX15 superceded the 75w-90 gear oil recommended fill to Synthetic 10w-40 motor oil. For REAL, google it. Though I like to use HDEO (Heavy Duty Engine Oil) in a 15w-40 weight. Its just a little thicker that the 10w-40, and very thermally stable. Chevron Delo 400 is my brand of choice.I Use it in the motor and transmission.

OK, thanks guys. Yes, I've already noticed that it does not shift as well, even though the transmission is quieter and feels better once in gear. I'll look for the old school stuff then.

I'm running Amsoil 75w-90 GL-4 and its great. I run it all my vehicles and swear by the stuff. It's the only stuff my '62 Unimog would shift on. I change my tranny fluids ever 40k miles.

An Amsoil dealer told me they don't suggest changing the oil very often.

That concerns me.

It shouldn't, you don't exactly have to take any knowledge exam to be a distributor...
