Same exact thing happened to me in the snow but didn't feel it when it was dry outside. The front axle joints were bad.

just for the sake of it, you do have the 231, not the 242? only the option for part time 4wd? if so and your on a slippery enough surface that the tires can spin and its still doing the binding thing, then yea, id say your front drive shaft is to blame. its a bad cv joint, there is no fixing, just replacing. try yanking on the front DS. if it spins or moves around at all then its bad. if there is no play in the DS then its fine. i had same issue when id put it into 4wd it would make a grinding sound, though it was the TC! fortunatley the DS was only $80

1: you got ripped off on the dshaft
2: Its a "Cardan" joint
3: The cardan joint is rebuildable.

Cardan.

I guess it is a kind of "CV" joint, according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constan...#Double_Cardan) But, theyre still rebuildable. 97 FSM has a 3-5pg writeup.

huh. interesting. thanks! wiki seems to have a really good, basic layout of the specs. its got all the specifics for engines, and TC's and what not. good to know that the front DS is rebildable! what about the cost of a rebuild. i was happy enough paying 80 for a used DS. its so easy to swap too! 8 bolts and your done.

Looks like about 80 to rebuild it too.
If you went to a Junkyard, you pry could of got that ds for 20-50.
