Default turning issues in 4x4

hey everyone - i've got a 99 xj sport. at low speeds and only when 4 wheel drive is engaged, i get a weird knock/pulse/bounce when turning sharply (like when parking). any ideas? what should i be looking at? it's perfectly smooth if i'm only in 2 wheel drive. thanks in advice

Is this happening on pavement? You are not supposed to use 4x4 on dry or wet pavement. Only use it on snow covered pavement or on dirt, loose gravel things of that sort. Using 4x4 on the road will cause binding in the front end and will cause damage.

The only thing I can think of is the TC is binding but if it was happening in a good amount of snow then yea drain your TC and both diff. How much snow was on the ground were you driving in when this happened cause the car will turn great in 4wd on snow but once you hit dry terrain it will bind up fast.

happens in pretty much any condition of snow - from hardpacked/ice to 8 inches. i can disengage the 4x4 before parking, just kind of annoying. the jeep in 2 wheel drive is pretty worthless on any sort of snow

You have the np231 TC? Change fluids asap but you might have to open up everything and visual it.

I mean def check your front differential. Do you have any lockers installed. Do you feel the bucking coming from your rear wheels? I know these are basic questions but just wanna get all the bases covered

Yea drain and fill your diffs and TC if it still happens then you'll have to open everything up and inspect your gears

I had gotten a similar effect this past winter, but I wasn't in too much snow.

But my real question is how do i check/refill the fluids in my front diff and the tc? I was able to figure out my rear easily. But i crawled under the front and didn't find a plug like on the rear. Am I blind?
