turdy five interchangeability
My quest for a 44 has been fruitless and I have some d35s laying around so here goes it.
I understand the c-clip - non c-clip difference, but not which parts I can use where. I haven't taken them both apart. I have 2 d35 rear ends.
1 from an 86 with 4.10s and a freshly rebuilt limited slip and the one in my new xj. 3.73 open with abs.
my questions...
1. i can't use my 99 shafts in my 86 because the bearing seat is different?
2. I can't use my 86 shafts in my 99 because theres no cut out for a c-clip and no tone ring? or will the tone ring somehow attach if need be.
3. can I use my LS in my 99, or only if I change the gear ratio
or is there a way to get my abs into my 86 housing so I can swap the whole thing. I have the 4.10s for the 30 to and am not afraid to regear.
ditching ABS in maine is a big no-no and Don't tell me to get a better axel, I know, and I'm trying.

if you are only going to run stock - 31's...a dana 35 should suffice. (SHOULD, people have still broken shafts). You'd be better off selling both for cheap and using the money to pick up a chrysler 8.25 from a newer model xj. 29 spline shafts, direct bolt in.

I agree, I shouldn't put money into the 35, but I have all the parts.
I would love to swap axels, I have been looking for a 44 and Have found nothing. ALSO quite illegal to ditch ABS in the state of maine. I don't know of any axel swaps that allow me to keep abs that functions with the xj/jeep system. So I was thinking I would at least put the best of the parts laying in my yard in it for the time being, and I am only rockin 31s.
most importand question, can I put my FREE NEW trak lock from my 86 into my 99 or does the c-clip thing get in the way.
"upgrade your axels, buy an aussie locker, blah blah blah. I know but I have this stuff free and want to stay legal, it is my dd

Go ahead and put all of the best pieces from your two D35s together into one since you already have the axles laying around. Run your 31 inch tires. You will be fine with this setup so long as you don't go any bigger with your tire size.

how about the brakes. both are drum but the 86 has 10" brakes and the 99 has 9". I think the 9"s have wider pads than the 10"s so I don't know if I would feel a difference, anyone have any experience with this?

(I find ABS limiting to my style of driving, and I have to remember it's there when I'm wargaming potential solutions to potential problems. That's extra thinking I really don't want - and I find front-wheel drive limiting in much the same manner.)
I do believe ABS-equipped C8.25s can be found under Dakotas and Durangos, but I don't know if the tone rings will be compatible with the XJ ABS system (I haven't had opportunity to find out.) However, the widths should be fairly compatible - that's something else I need to check.
