What about the drive belts accessorys. Like the alternator. I've seen them make noise similar to what you are describing.

Only thing that I know is bad is the a/c compressor, alternator is still good so is the power steering pump and the water pump is only 6 months old if that

The flaps that direct air through the hvac system are vacuum actuated. If there was a leak, it could make a noise similar to what you are described...agains, just boogers.

Any thoughts on if this might have anything to do with the sound?

You're thinking to much into it. I have a 93 with the same exact noise. Its just air rushing past the butterfly in the throttle body. If you play with the throttle when that noise occurs, you'll notice the sound changes. There is nothing to worry about. I heard it's pretty common. If it bothers you that much, buy a bored throttle body with a new butterfly.

No way to play with the butterfly when it happens since its only when the engine is under load like passing on the highway or climbing hills

I recently did a quick fix exhaust repair on my 92. There were saw-zalls and hammers involved. once I had it all put back together there was a small slit cut into one of the couplings that made a cool sounding turbo whistle. So it sounds like you are in the right place by looking into your exhaust system as being the culprit.

Misread what was said sorry....as stated in the original post though when I let off the gas or when the transmission shifts the sound stops just as a turbo would so playing with the throttle won't make any difference

For the exhaust if anything I'm just gonna remove the cat completely and put a section of pipe in....i did it with my 95 when I had it didn't have any issues with the loss of backpressure like you'd expect

During my battles with my air conditioning and the radiator hose that popped off I may have found the problem causing the whistle, it appears that one of the vacuum lines that runs from the fuel tank to the charcoal canister broke and was no longer attached to the canister and my intake/exhaust gasket has started to leak
