Tune up
Ll right guys my xj has a bout 200k on it. It idles like crap has misfires and runs rich. Now I'm a lil depressed about it cause it seems something is always wrong. My theory is at some point I'll come to the end of it. I hope. I want to tune it back up and get it running good and I'm well on my way. Changed my oil flushed my cooling system. New wires and plugs maybe 700 mikes ago. Within the last 6 months both 02 sensors a crank sensor. Now I think I'll continue with a dist. Cap and clean my iac. I need some CHEAP easy things I can fix as I'm on a tight budget (just got married). I plan at some point to replace my vacuum lines possibly sea foam my engine and then run some good engine cleaner when I want to change my oil again. The previous owners were cheap and everything was done poorly and not taken care of well. So my work is cut out for me. My plans are to regear and lock up the rear and do a milder low cog setup. Again on a budget. I'm pretty familiar with the xj world I just need some tips. Is it to late to try and clean it up? I don't want to do any major engine work.

Also I'd like to add that it has a bad heat soak issue. It floods so bad that I have to rev it like crazy to get it to clear out.

And yes, a full tuneup of plugs, quality wires, cap, rotor and check/replace air filter is always a good idea. If hoses and thermostat are original, I'd sure get them replaced as well; I use only MOPAR 195 degree stats. I'd also recommend a bottle of Chevron/Techron to help clean the fuel system and optimize fuel injector spray patterns. If your engine is running well, I recommend Techron, if it is symptomatic, I recommend BG44k which is a more aggressive cleaner.
Please give us details on your "heat soak" issue. Does it occur only upon restart of a hot engine?
Enjoy your '97!

Yes the heat soak is ONLY low speeds after running hot for awhile. When I say hot I mean 210-220 normal operating temp. Those temps are on constant hills running trails.
