Default Trying to understand what the 4wd swithitch an

I have a 91 with a 242 TC. Its just in 4lo as i cant get itto run in anyother mode without grinding. I checked the linkage and adjusted it a few times to no success.

The light states its in part time 4 wd. It is in in 4 lo as the revs etc all indicate that.

Im trying to understand if theri is anything more than an indicator of drive type that that circuit t is used for. As i see form the manual theres a wire going form the mechanical 4wd switch to the transmission and out again. Is that circit just for the right indicator light to be lite or is it functional as far as commanding something in the tranny to change when shifted. As all i get is grinding trying to get it into any other range form 4lo.

It was running fine then at city speed and little load it started to grind. I had not had it in any other range.
