trying to mount a hitch from a 84 onto a 92

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums and a new jeep owner. I have a 92 2wd 4d with the 4.0 liter... I love this jeep and can't wait to get a 4wd but this one will do for now.

Anyway, here's the issue... I found a hitch online that came off a 84 Cherokee... I want to know if the rear mounting location is the same for both years. I have a universal hitch, but it is really bulky and won't work without modding my exhaust which I can't afford to do right now. Anyone know?

I cannot say myself if they are an exact match, but if your trying to save some major cash on a hitch, try you local JK. i just picked up a class III for my 99 and it only cost me $15.50, and another $10 to have it pulled, so $25.50 all together

If it doesn't match without any MOD then its good catch but if not then better find something that would...

The only other thing you would have to get if you did the JK route is bolts because the JK pullers will more than likely melt the existing bolts. and make sure you get one that looks good everywhere, not just the receiver. I saw multiple hitches that looked awesome from the outside view, but when I looked underneath, it was all rot and not worth saving. Let us know what you do. I'm curious if the older year will fit, and if you need more info on the JK hitch, just pm me.

For some reason my phone puts JK instead of JY. I meant junkyard hitch. damn auto correct.

Well if I can remember back that far (memory seems to fade from keeping jeeps for over 8 years). I used to own an 88 cherokee with a u-hall hitch that used the nut strip inside the frame to attach the bolts. When I traded in the 88 for a 96 model, I moved the hitch to the 96. The 96 did not have the nut strip, so I had to snake the bolts in place with wire through the frame openings. The weight of the hitch held the bolts in place while tighting up the nuts and lockwashers. I don't remember having to drill new holes to attach the hitch, so I would say the hole pattern is the same on most all cherokees.

well wouldn't the u-haul hitch be "universal"? or do they make specific hitches for specific vehicles?

If you look on their website, they list the hitch number specific to the vehicle. I was looking to replace the hitch a few years back, due to the ball post (tongue) has rusted inside the tube frame and will not come out. Have tried heating the receiver, hit with sledge hammer and placed chain around tree and the darn thing will not come apart. The rust has welded the tubes together. Just put a bolt and nut through hole just in case. Would probably rip the hitch off the frame before getting that tongue apart. Should have put a LOT more grease in tube earlier in it life.

Ok, gotcha. I wasn't sure about them being able to have specific hitches. I just found one that was in a JY and it was from a local company that only installs hitches and anything to do with trailers, and I found the ball post in the trunk of another XJ and just slipped it in the receiver and got that sucker for free haha

See that's what has me thinking its not the right hitch.... the hit sent me a pic if the hitch and it looks more like it would attach to the side of the frame rails rather than to the bottom...

that will most likely not work then because of your exhaust. I have a 99 and I know it won't work for me because of my outpipe, I'm not sure about your year

That's what I'm sayin, my tailpipe is positioned right underneath the frame rail on the RHS... so I don't think this one is goin to work.

Well... went to couple of boneyards today... the one I was hoping to get it from said the u-pull was closed (they also have a shredder) I asked them why and they told me some deal about the state making it harder for them to do salvage so they weren't doing it anymore... sucks! So I went to the other nearby one and wound up with a u-haul brand for 40 bucks pulled... which is not bad considering their prices are high in everything.
