When I noticed that there are no towing hooks in my Jeep, some people told me that it is bekoz your Jeep: 1. was not made for the gulf!! 2. your Jeep has an automatic transmission!!

Is it true??

Can I tow other cars with my auto transmission car??

 

I've towed a ton of crap in my XJ, never had any problems with an A/T, all I did was install the hitch, and started towing...
As for the tow hooks, I have a 92 and a 98 and neither one of them has hooks on it.

 

some models come with tow hooks. if not, just buy some but make sure they tie into the unibody. i dont think the auto has anything to do with towing.

 

If you're going to be towing on a regular basis, you may want to consider getting some DANA 44 axles, but other than that, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to tow. Tow hooks are easy to find, and you could probably find an old pair of stock style hooks (they're actually pretty decent. They're pretty heavy duty and have a clip on them to keep things on the hook on the hook.)

Remember to hook into the unibody. I.E. any part of the XJ that is not removable by any other means than cutting. You may want to consider some aftermarket bumpers (can be pretty spendy) if you plan on making towing a regular activity. You may want to do this any way.

But no, every vehicle can tow something, it's just a matter of capacity. See your XJ's owner's manual for towing details (See index: towing).

 

You can install tow hooks, as stated, and you can without a doubt tow with your automatic transmission.

You should tell whoever your hearing this from to take a hike or actually learn what they are talking about before they start talking.

 

My 98 had the Up Country package that included skids and front tow hooks among other things.

 

Tow hooks were an option that you only got if requested, but they were also part of several different packages.
As for the automatic it will be fine but I suggest that you also add a transmission cooler due to the temperatures in the Gulf.

I live in germany and i see the smallest VW's hawling trailors twice the size of their little VW polo. these things only have like 45hp. i just want to know what they feed the mice to get em to run that fast. im sure your XJ can handle it.

Rugged Ridge Tow Hooks

My XJ didn't have front tow hooks or a rear trailor hitch when I bought. I got tow hooks and a trailor hitch from a donor XJ in the scrap yard. The holes were already there. I just had to bolt them on. Like the other guys said, the impotant thing is that your tow hooks and trailor hitch must be bolted directly to the unit body frame or they're not gonna handle towing strain. If you have some cheap tow hook that doesn't have the bracket to bolt it to the unit body, don't buy it. Same goes with a trailor hitch. Should have like 4 or 5 holes on each side to bolt it to the unit body frame. Anything less I wouldn't buy it.
