Friday the cel came on and I finally had a chance to pop in the reader and I got three codes
P1491 (rad fan control relay circuit)
P1698
P0705
My jeep is 1999 Cherokee 4.0 with aw4
I read in a book that 1491 will pop up on for 2.5 engines only. That's weird
I couldn't find other two codes in the book but I read online that 0705 is trans range sensor circuit malfunction. What is that exactly?

P0705-RANGE SENSOR
No Transmission Range Sensor signals are received or two conflicting signals are received from the Transmission Range Sensor at the same time by the TCM.
Possible Causes:
PCM PARK/NEUTRAL DTC’S PRESENT
INTERMITTENT WIRING AND/OR CONNECTORS
FUSED IGNITION SWITCH OUTPUT OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
TRS 1-2 SENSE CIRCUIT OPEN
TRS 3 SENSE CIRCUIT OPEN
TRS OVERDRIVE SENSE CIRCUIT OPEN
TRS REVERSE SENSE CIRCUIT OPEN
TRS 1-2 SENSE CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
TRS 3 SENSE CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
TRS OVERDRIVE SENSE CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
TRS REVERSE SENSE CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
TRS 1-2 SENSE CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
TRS 3 SENSE CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
TRS OVERDRIVE SENSE CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
TRS REVERSE SENSE CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
TRANS RANGE SENSOR-SENSE CIRCUIT
TCM-TRS SENSE CIRCUIT INPUTS
The Tranamission Range Sensor is also known as the NSS.
Are you have transmission shifting problems, reverse lights problems, or problems starting in Park?

I have problems with up shifting.... 3500 rpms to upshift from 1st to 2nd then 3,000 rpms to go up to third. When I reach 65 mph, it finally would shift into overdrive.
No problems with reverse lights, however, when I shift into reverse, it takes 3 seconds to engage.
It also won't downshift when going uphill, I would have to press gas more in order to downshift.
It also have high idle when starting the engine.
It all points to faulty TPS and I replaced that with new BWD one. Still the same. I figured I should have gone with a mopar brand though.
You really think NSS need fixing? I never had a problem starting it in park.

That code P1698 would have indicated communication problems with the TCM, which P0705 may have caused.
I'll dig through the diagrams and show you the TRS, etc.
Do the transmission gear positions on the gear select bezel match the gear selector?

Yes it does because it disengage when I shift it onto neutral, and engages backwards when in reverse and engages forward in drive and I'm able to let go of brake pedal when I'm in park without moving.
That's why I'm confused this is happening.
Do u think a mopar TPS would help?

Try adjusting your kickdown cable and see if your shifting problems improve.

If not you may have to check the NSS (electrical readings) and/or do the mechanical shifting test to see if it's an electrical problem or a tranny problem.

If you want, you can do electrical checks on the NSS. Go to this thread, page 2, post 23 and 24.
https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/neu...180724/index2/
The thread is about starting issues but I put pinouts of the NSS connectors and the readings for each function of the NSS.
Edit: In post #4 of this thread there's a pic that shows the location of the TRS/NSS connector(s).
