Default Trim Fenders

I want to trim my fenders but would like to know what you guys do about the plastic cover underneath since it attaches at the fender bolt holes. I assume this has to be removed but you probably dont want to leave the body wide open for mud and such to pack up into right? Whatcha do about this, anyone? Thanks!

I just ripped mine out and threw it in my backyard for later use. I planned on cutting a piece of it out to jam up in the slot where you see the door. Most people just shove a pool noodle in there because it's effective and cheap. I never did get around to hacking up the plastic to stick in there and it's fine. A few rocks kick up and make some noise every now and again, but it's nothing to worry about.

I used the fender liner from a newer XJ (97 & newer) because they're a little smaller. A little creative cutting and it fit right up in there with the clips.

I run a little bit in the rear but I don't run bump stops at the moment either. I useed a little expanding foam to fill in the rest

k ive been pondering this for some time cause i want to keep the plastic inserts on the inside of the fender. my plan is to cut and roll the front fender just like you would the rear, using the lip created from the roll to hold and secure the plastic insert. so basically trim the insert so it sits just to the inside of the fender, then roll the fender lip back to hold the plastic up and into the fender. utilize the holes already in the fender to zip tie the insert in place and done. has anyone done this or thought of this? or am i gonna be a trend setter...
