Dexron III is what is recommended for the AW4. Atf +4 can cause slippage in older AW4s.

If the linkage is operating correctly, the fluid level is right and it won't move when shifted manually,I think you're looking at internal repairs.
It was slipping...you changed fluid...a week later it won't move forward at all. Possibly worn clutches, still grabbed when you had dirty fluid in there to provide a bit more friction, clean fluid and it won't move. Or a leak in one of the piston seals, forward clutch perhaps.

Question Help

I got me a 97 jeep Laredo inline 6 with a very similar problem...spent hours looking and still nothing like the problem I have... So when in park it stays in park. I slide it into reverse and it's ready to go backwords..I slide it down to neutral, it's in neutral..Now I slide it down into Drive, remains like it's in neutral. Slid it down to D2 same thing, down to D1 SAME THING!! Would this be a cable problem considering I still have reverse park and neutral? I'm almost ready to give someone a $100 reward if they can diagnose this problem!!!! Lol much appreciated!

I'm no expert here but have learned to trust Radi, Cruiser and others here....see Radi's post again... I did notice nobody mentions pulling the pan and checking that the screen isn't completely clogged, a last ditch effort after trying fresh Dexron III.

Kinda old thread...like almost 4 years...

But, advising someone to use that fluid in an aW4 trans is not sound advice.

That fluid CAUSES problems sometimes i that trans. Well documented.

That said, the OP's problem was probably a blown or corroded fuse for the TCU.

My 93 xj does the same thing after the nss went out. Fluid good. But drives in reverse and in 1-2 with no problem. It's just over drive and 3rd gear. Here's the funny thing though I don't drive it on the road yet. I've been building this jeep since 2015 when I bought it. I just go about 20 feet every a couple weeks just to move it. Any ideas.
