Default transmission whine ideas?

iv got a 89 cherokee with the ba10/5- 5 speed transmission. when i have a full load of people or towing something up hill for a long/short period of time ( depending on the weight and how many people) it starts whining alot and it gets loader as i progress up the hill (only 2nd and 3rd gear from what i experienced) but once i get back on flat or down hill it fades away like it never happened. any one have an idea on what causing this?

you can, but its big undertaking, requiring an oil pump and plumbing to and from the trans.

from what I know of the pukegoat, it sounds like you're in the beginning stages of the infamous case stretching. Basically the BA 10/5 is weak transmission for being in a cherokee and the case begins to stretch over time. One of the symptoms is gear wine from the gears not lining up properly. Eventually it'll become permanent and it'll destroy the transmission. Not trying to scare you, but give you a heads up that you may want to source an AX-15e to have on hand so you can swap it in if the wine starts to get worse.

the pukealot uses a 21 spline output shaft which in turn means that the transfer case also has a 21 spline input shaft. the AX-15 uses a 23 spline output shaft. i would just source an AX-15 already matted to a NP231. that is the easiest way i did the same swap and it is not that difficult, but i also went to the external slave set-up found in 93-up Cherokees. the internal one isnt that bad it is just easier to change the external when it blows up.

take a look at the fluid level and condition before freakin out. I changed mine to the lucas auto trans additive and it was quiet afterward. Yes I put it in my manual tranny.

any XJ with a manual transmission has either the Pugueot BA 10/5, AX-15 or NV3550(pretty much the same as an AX-15)

The BA 10/5 is split down the case like a hotdog in the way its bolted together where the AX15 and NV3550, the casing is cast aluminum rings that are bolted together "hamburger style"

do the 2000 cherokees use the ba10/5 or the peugot trans? I had a 2k for awhile till it was smashed to the point that 3 out of 4 doors wouldn't open. That car had a manual and it shifted awesome.

o.k. ya did a bit of research on the peugot. Never seen a trans split down the center, that trans belongs in a light car for sure.
