So this has been happening for a couple weeks now and I'm at a loss as to what is wrong. The check engine light is on and it feels like the tranny is trying to take off in 3rd or 4th gear but manually shifting it is fine. Sometimes it is intermittent though, once I went a couple days without a problem and then it reoccurred. Since the first symptom I have replaced the transmission speed sensor and the neutral safety switch but neither have fixed it. Before I replaced these the codes that came up were: P0700, P0715, P0756, and P0758. I don't know if their have been new codes since the part replacement though. I've been doing some research and I suppose it could be my shift solenoids, something electrical with the TCU, or possibly the TPS. Any advice or help is appreciated! Oh forgot to mention its a 98 xj 4.0 I6 automatic

Yeah I would feel a lot better getting whatever fixed by a professional but around here they'll charge you an arm and a leg. I posted on here hoping someone might have better clue as to what is wrong so I can spend less to get it fixed and maybe learn a little along the way

Obviously they agree with my post #2. A professional mechanic or shop has to charge for his time and knowledge, just as any other professional has every right to do. You should be glad to pay it and not complain about prices. They are performing a valuable service. Look how much time and money you have wasted already with no fix yet.
You don't have to have them fix it, just pay for the diagnosis and try to fix it yourself.
But everything might not be able to be fixed at home if it is transmission internals. Which, in my unprofesssional opinion, is what it might turn out to be.

I'm not trying to bash on mechanics, most the time it's people doing what they love. I'm just trying to say I'd rather spend money on a part and learn about it rather than spend money on a part AND pay somebody to install it. Also my money hasn't been completely wasted because I needed a new nss anyway and I plan on keeping this jeep for a while so now it already has a brand new tranny speed sensor that will last. Thank you for you time though, you might be right after all about needing to see a mechanic but I'm just trying to learn on my own also

i have a 98 grand cherokee with a 6 cyl auto on 35's with 4.88 gears. i bought it used and have noticed that when in 4 high it acts as though im power braking it anytime im in a tough spot. if i put it in 4 low it will go anywhere. before i noticed it had this problem i was pushing through about 2 feet of snow and the tranny started overheating. it cooled down quickly and didnt heat up at all once i put it in 4 low. the rig has 144k miles on it so i chalked it up to too many beatings but before i buy a beefier tranny i wanted to post this in case its fixable for less money. by the way if anyone knows where i should look for a proper tranny please let me know. thanks!
