Default transmission trouble

have an 89 cherokee lerado and the transmission went out we replaced it with a 95 cherokee country transmission. all gears worked in the transmission when we took it out of the other jeep. we put it in my 89 and put fresh fluid and filter in it when we put it in. went to back it out of the shop and it had no reverse. and i also think it is missing first gear too. what could be wrong with the transmission for it to be missing first gear. i had people tell me that it could just be stuck check ***** from the transmission setting without fluid in it. any help would be great. its a daily driver and its already been off the road for 2 weeks and its getting hard to get around with out my jeep working right. someone with any knowledge would be alot of help because i know nothing about transmissions other then mines not working right.

drop the pan and make sure that 1)the correct filter was installed and (2) that the low/reverse servo is at the correct adjustment . Are you sure that you have used the correct fluid for the trans and that there is enough fluid?

if that doesn't work, the clutches may be warped for first and reverse. if that's the case, ur gonna have to pull it out again, and put a different one in.

i replaced the nss with the 89 one and replaced everything else except the tree wires that go inside the transmission. i think they go to the shift solenoids. the wired are same color and everything so my buddy spliced them together. he had done it several times before and it was worked every time. today i regained my first gear while driving but i still have no reverse. im wondering if the insides are just froze up because the transmission has been standing up on the bell housing for about a month or so. and all the fluid drained out.

Could be. I usually soak the valve body in clean fluid before i put it together, to avoid air bubbles and stuck solenoids.

ok so my original post was wrong. i actually had first gear. only reverse was missing. after countless hours of research i pulled the pan and found that the one of the two tubes that connect from the valve body to the transmission had come out of its hole and pushed over and up against the valve body and it goes to reverse. put it back in its hole put the pan back on and filled er back up with fluid and havent had any problems since.
