Transmission or Transfer case issue?
Not sure what is wrong, perhaps someone else might have a take on this.
Today the heep was running fine, no issue. On my way home I took the interstate as usual and the usual back roads. I have not been offroad in a long long time and I don't go over 70. As I am starting up a hill I notice something dreadfully wrong as the heep wasn't really going anywhere. It made it about 1/4 the way up this hill in town and ... it sounded like it was bogging down. I pressed the brakes, put it in park, 4 ways and waited about a minute then back into drive then it was "normal" but it hesitated to actually go forward when I hit the pedal.. I was able to drive her about 2 miles to the hill by my house then... it happened again - as it made about 10 or 15 feet up the hill the rpms went up but the actual acceleration did not occur. The engine sounds fine and its not over heating. And the This is whats lead me to believe its tranny or transfer case.
I hope someone might have some light on this. I need this jeep running ASAP.

well, if it were an engine issue - there are no dummy lights on and the engine sounds great. The performance outside of park... is the issue. That is usually tell tale signs of transmission or transfer case...

Usually yes. However under a load the engine can act differently. I ran into similar issues with my Camaro. Sounded fine under no load... however under a load it bogged and fussed... no check engine light. Ended up being an O2 sensor.
Or maybe I misunderstood? Can you feel the trans slipping? Did the torque converter fail to unlock?

smog? how did transfer case / transmission issue convert to smog?
The issue is: From stop, skinny pedal pressed - rpms increase - very slow movement - then "something engauges" and it will go forward.
On an incline, it has the most difficulty and feels like it is "slipping" (using that term VERY loosely here)
I did attempt to engauge 4 wheel drive to check if it was transfer case, in which case there was no change in ability to go forward.
I HOPE its just fluid level - jeep has sat now for almost a week
Reverse is hydraulic so we can't really use that to explain this - now can we?
I probably should note that the 4.5" lift was just installed 9/10/11.

Tranny issue sound's like but due the the complexity of the auto trans it could be anything from low to no fluid to the clutches to the convertor. But it is a tranny issue the way you describe it not sure where the rest of their heads are stuck? good luck guy.

NO new tranny in my future YAY!
However I do need to find a shop. I replaced the one transmission line a while back, but its one of those pressure fittings (i can't stand them) and ofcourse i didn't get it in there JUST right SO....yeah...
I checked the fluid level. No burnt smell just that pungent transmission fluid smell and a TINY drop on the bottom of the stick (yes it was running, in neutral, and I even waited until it was at "peak" temp before I checked it - multiple times)
I gave her a full line fill up, of dex III/m and drove to about 20 miles. The shift was smooth but the ride there yeilded some interesting results... the rear of the jeep is now spackled with trans fluid and I got to see a massive smoke screen behind me.
See above, where i said i didn't get it JUST right.... the only area that is wet is RIGHT where that dang fitting is, the muffler and undercarriage - where it sprayed and my rear housing is rather moist too.
