Default Transmission Success!

Ok -- About a week ago i posted about my '86's transmission being busted. It's the Torqueflite 904 3-speed attached to the 2.8 V6 (sigh...i know). The symptoms were terrible transmission slipping, 'box of rocks' noise under load, and complete loss of power. Basically, the Jeep would start out sluggishly in 1st, then go to 4k rpm, and then lose all power. Smoke was coming out of the dipstick tube.

Well, i had to have it towed back to my house. It's been sitting while i've been dealing with death wobble in my '95. I got around to it today.

I dropped the pan and changed the filter. The fluid was a solid red color, with a lot of very fine metal shavings in the pan (almost like mud). It also had about a teaspoon of larger metal shavings on the filter. The fluid didn't really smell burnt at all, just like ATF. I put a new filter and gasket on and filled it up with Bar's Transmission Repair and Dex/Merc to the perfect amount by getting it hot and letting it run in neutral.

Took it around the block...RUNS GREAT! Actually, it runs better than when i got it. It shifts smooth and downshifts correctly when i stop. Not sure why it suddenly resurrected itself on a fluid and filter change....but i'm not complaining.

This is a huge weight off of my shoulders because i was looking at $500-1,200 in repairs, depending on if it needed a new tranny, rebuild, torque converter, etc. If it had cost that much, i would have probably parted it out. I'm just glad it's back to it's old self and i get to keep it.

That 904 has been around forever, lol. It isn't a bad transmisison. Glad you got yours running.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the 904 and it's bigger brother the 727:

Enjoy it for the week that it works before it craps out again.

i sure hope it doesn't crap out again soon. It was rebuilt last June. I did notice that when i was taking the bolts out for the pan, they were barely even hand tight. I had a leak, but i never would have guessed it was because the dummy that put the pan on didn't tighten the bolts. But that's another thing....why didn't Torqueflite just put a damn drain plug on their transmissions?? My TF999 in my YJ is the same way. Gotta drop the whole pan to drain fluid. I'm thinking about drilling a hole, and welding a nut to the inside of the pan so i can just use a bolt as my drain plug....

I drove it to work today and it runs smooth as butter.
