Default transmission stuck in gear

new to the forums hows it going all. anyways down to business . i have a 96 cherokee 4wd auto. for the past month or so every once and awhile the transmission would seem like its not shifting down to first when i stopped. it would only do this here and there. about a week ago it decided not to shift into first anymore. i can manualy shift it into 1-2 then shift to 3 then overdrive. acts fine on the highway once i get it up to speed. just looking for some ideas where to start on this one. any info is appreciated.

how bad is the fluid? any noticeable buildup of clutch material in the fluid, like metallic particles?

First adjust the throttle valve cable, it's free & you can't hurt anything:

Report back after.

Not to hijack this thread, But i have an ax-5 tranny and it gets stuck in first. then you have to pull the shifter out and slide this little metal sliding piece forward to get it unstuck. Kind of like a bolt action rifle. Is there a permanet fix or should i just get an ax15 tranny. The tranny works fine and it doesnt happen often but it would be nice to not have to deal with it.....Ideas???

I would start researching tps and tcm issues and how to test them out, this thread seems similar to some I remember reading in the past....

To the search button lol.
