99 Cherokee 4.0

Started randomly "slipping" today. Give it gas, engine roars but no forward progress, eventually it comes back - but with a burning smell

Thoughts?

Slipping is usually caused by low fluid.
The burning smell is likely from the transmission also. It may need a drain and fill of fresh DexronIII Mercon because it probably overheated the fluid and has contaminants from the clutch pack slipping.

Try searching a little. This issue has been well discussed......
Now many people might suggest a drain and fill, with Dex/Merc 3.
However the first thing to check is fluid level.

Transmission is done. Fluid can not fix burnt plates. If you plan on keeping the jeep rebuild it.

Easy way to tell is to drain the fluid. If its burnt and slipping then the tranny needs rebuilt.

True story. I had a van that slipped around left hand corners only. No joking. I check everything, had the fluid and filter changed, etc.... still slipped around left hand corners.
I drove it for a year like this. Just figured the tranny needed rebuilt. Finally one day I was in a bad mood. The slipping g transmission was wearing thin on me. Fluid level was fine, actually a bit overfull. Well I said screw it. I dumped 3 quarts in just for spite. NEVER slipped after that.. LOL. That was 20 + years ago.

No.

The transmission is NOT done. I have over 10k on mine since I had the same problem one evening. Fluid was BLACK like used engine oil, and smelled burnt.

I did a complete flush, and have been driving it with no problem since. That includes towing some heavy loads over rough roads.

If he just pulls the dipstick and smells it he will be able to tell if it has a burnt smell to it, as we all know it surely must.

If it is shot I would suggest an AW4 from a JY with a warranty has to be cheaper than a rebuilt. But if it were mine I would rebuild it and put a really good torque converter an aftermarket one from Hugh's Performance in it also. I have used their converters in a lot of different apps (Race to 4W4's) for the last 30 yrs. and very hard to beat.

I would not give up on the transmission either. The AW4 is a sturdy trans.
Likely the shop you brought to is going to advice a revision/rebuilt . Ignore that for now and first see how you go with a complete ATF replacing action. After all, a few gallons of ATF will cost a lot less $$ than a rebuilt.
