Right quick! Can anyone tell me if the shifter handles are interchangeable between pre' 97 & '97 up Cherokees? I need a handle NOW for my '92 & all they have here are '97 up. Thanks!

Really? I've had a 97+ one for an automatic and it didn't seem any different than the original one for my 87. I was going to put it one except it didn't look right with the rest of the interior.

This guy put a zj handle on. http://www.go.jeep-xj.info/HowtoShifterHandles.htm

I'm pretty sure it will fit...??

Well I found out! I was at the junk yard with limited time & had to act fast.

CCKen is right. It didn't fit my '92. They seem to be a little shorter on the bottom. Kinda sits on the top of the shaft and can't be seated snugly. I have been using a ZJ handle for years, but they crack on the inside very easily. I am on my 4th or 5th. Tired of swapping them out. It doesn't shift into park properly when it's cracked. So I'm going back to my XJ handle.
Thanks guys!

OK, update: it does fit. What doesn't fit is the little white insert. The one from the ZJ shifter is longer, which prevents the XJ handle from being seated. I got the shorter insert & it now works perfect.

So no matter which shifter handle you use, make sure you get the insert that goes with it. Definitely makes a difference. I've seen shifter handles for sale on ebay & craigs list & they are sold alone. My experience has been that without the insert you will not get a good fit.
