Default Transmission Service Question.

I have a 1995 XJ with an AW4 and i have already did a drain and fill service on it. First concern i have is what is the correct fluid to use in an AW4? I was soon going to do a full fluid flush by disconnecting the trans lines, putting the intake line in a bucket full of trans fluid and the return line in an empty bucket. Has any one had experience with doing this? If so would you advise it? Thanks!

The correct fluid is DexronIII. I wouldn't worry about the flush unless the fluid is really dirty, drain and fill via the drain plug and trans dip-stick tube is the recommended maintenance and should be done every 30k mi. The other option (flush alternative) if the fluid is really dirty is to change it 2 or 3 times. Change it, drive a week or two, change it again, repeat until the fluid is clean (bright red with no burnt smell).

^^ Don't let the parts places try to sell you the ATF +4.

Use only DexronIII/Mercon type fluid, never ATF+4. Mobil One's Synthetic ATF is amazing stuff, and highly recommended.

I agree with Radi on this.

There is a technical service bulletin issued by Chrysler a while back stating that ATF+4 is the correct fluid, but some (not all to be fair) have experienced some slippage in their transmission when they switched to it.

Stick with Dex/Merc III compatible fluid (true licensed Dex/Merc is no longer available).

I've never tried it on an XJ, but most ATs will not suck fluid through a cooler line. You'd have to pour the replacement fluid in through the dipstick tube as it spit the old fluid out the cooler line.
