Default transmission reassembly

Hey guys another quick question... You fill the torque convertor full of fluid before installing it correct? (Half full) thanks!

I put 1 qt in before installing so it doesn't start up dry. It will finish the job itself when the pump runs. Dexron, not ATF+4

Thanks man. I have always used Amsoil ATF with great results and will continue to do so but I hear that a lot on the various Jeep forums. Didn't Chrysler come out in 2007 and say that it was totally fine to use the ATF+4 in the XJ? I have used synthetic in everything I own with great results.

Yup! Found it!- easier than I though lol. Recommended for: ^ Better anti-wear properties ^ Improved rust/corrosion prevention ^ Controls oxidation ^ Eliminates deposits ^ Controls friction ^ Retains anti-foaming properties ^ Superior properties for low temperature operation FLUID COLOR

NOTE :**AWA (Asian Warner) transmission are now included in this Service Bulletin. ATF+4(R) is recommended for AW-4 (Asian Warner) transmissions** NOTE :This Service Bulletin DOES NOT apply to Sprinter transmissions, Crossfire transmissions, MK/PM vehicles equipped with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and WG vehicles equipped with a diesel engine (sales code ENF) and a W5J400 or NAG1 transmission (sales code DGJ). DISCUSSION:
ATF+4(R) - (Type 9602) is being used as factory fill for Chrysler Group automatic transmissions. ATF+4(R) is recommended for all vehicles equipped with Chrysler Group automatic transmissions EXCEPT FOR THOSE LISTED IN THE NOTE ABOVE.
NOTE :ATF+4(R) must always be used in vehicles that were originally filled with ATF+4(R). DO NOT USE ANY OTHER FLUID. NOTE :ATF+4(R) is backward compatible with ATF+3, ATF+2, and ATF+. Additionally, ATF+4(R) can be used to top off vehicles that used ATF+3, ATF+2, or ATF+. NOTE :If ATF+4® is used to service models originally filled with ATF+3, ATF+2, and ATF+ the fluid maintenance schedules listed for that model does not change. The service interval currently in effect for a given model should continue to be followed. Refer to the Service or Owners manual for maintenance schedule directions. In general terms, If ATF+, ATF+2 or ATF+3 was the recommended fluid, it is now recommended to use ATF+4®
BENEFITS
^ Better anti-wear properties ^ Improved rust/corrosion prevention ^ Controls oxidation ^ Eliminates deposits ^ Controls friction ^ Retains anti-foaming properties ^ Superior properties for low temperature operation FLUID COLOR
Mopar ATF+4(R) has exceptional durability. However, the red dye used in ATF+4(R) is not permanent; as the fluid ages it may become darker or appear brown in color. ATF+4(R) also has a unique odor that may change with age. With ATF+4(R) fluid, color and odor are no longer indicators of fluid condition and do not necessarily support a fluid change.

Continue with your AMSOIL then. Chrysler added the XJ's AW4 to that list when warranty support ended so they could stock fewer fluids. The AW4 was the last transmission they supported running Dexron III fluid, which incidentally they paid royalties to GM on.

Some AW4s run fine on it. A lot slip. Bottom line is that it's not a Chrysler transmission so run what the manufacturer specified. Volvo and Toyota still specify fluid compatible with the original spec.

This is pretty well documented on all the Jeep sites.

To answer your original question, yes the FSM says to partially fill the torque converter before installation.

Just in case someone stumbles across this thread and has the older A904 like me, I found that Chrysler changed their specs and recommends avoiding DexIII and using only ATF+ fluids. Seems the Dex fluids can damage the A904, but luckily those were only used in the first 3 years I believe 84, 85 and 86 models.

That makes sense. Did it even exist when the manufacture put out their recommendation? I have just always had great, noticeable results using synthetic in all my applications (dirt bikes, boats, diffs, engines etc.) Seems 50/50 on the Jeep sites. Some say everything is smoother, some say it slips. I personally have not had a problem, the opposite in fact, but I started all synthetic with 20,000 on the Jeep. Thanks for the info.

Per my 2001XJ FSM, you're supposed to use Dexron II/IIE/III (or Dexron VI, I believe, is the current generation...) The use of ATF +3/+4 tends to cause clutch chatter and slippage, due to the different friction modifiers used.

The AW4 is not and never has been a Chrysler slushbox - it's actually a Toyota design, built by Aisin/Warner (and used on Toyota and Lexus RWD cars and light trucks, particularly the Celica/Supra, pickup, and RWD Toyota Van.)

If you look at the drain plug, it should still have "DII" stamped into the head, indicating the use of Dexron. Do not use any fluid that doesn't match the Dexron spec - if it doesn't say it meets it on the front of the bottle, look at the back. If it doesn't say on the back, then put that bottle down and look at a different fluid.

The Mercon V (new Ford spec) is close enough to Dexron VI that you'll often find both on the same label - but check to make sure the fluid meets the Dexron spec, or buy something that does. You'll need about four quarts for the AW4 on a drain and fill (dump in three and check - odds are, if you haven't dropped the pan, you won't need the whole fourth quart.)
^^^^^^I found this post from 5-90 Just adding to the info

Yes over the years the FSMs transitioned from "ATF+3 is better" to "Only use Dexron in an emergency if ATF+3 is not available" to "Never use Dexron". They found that Dex causes clutch chatter in the 03RH/32RH/A904/A999 transmissions.
