Don't be in a rush to replace all of the solenoids. If its shifting electronically 1-2-3, then BOTH of the shift solenoids are working, and 4th is engaged when both S1 and S2 are OFF. If you're missing lockup, that is the S3 solenoid, and it can be disengaged by the brake pedal switch. Likewise, the VSS and TPS are both in play.

ok well I know I can have the shifter in OD position be driving around 45-50 mph at roughly 3000-3500 rpms and drop the shifter down into 3 and it doesn't down shift into 3rd. so I assume that it isn't shifting into 4th at all.
I will try taking the fuse out of the distribution box in the morning on way to the post office as its already dark outside now.
also plan on testing the 7 pin connector tomorrow afternoon.
Ok well I have been reading that these solenoids have an achilles hill of heat. I am thinking since it is a mail jeep with the extra strain on trans which is excess heat that it has just burned up the solenoid.

well I have already replaced the TPS cause I was told it could be that and for a $20 TPS I thought buy it its worth the try. I haven't changed or even thought about the VSS mainly cause my speedometer is still working but I don't know if thats a safe assumption or not.

One of the manuals will explain how to test the NSS to make sure you have continuity where you need it and make sure you don't where it isn't wanted. I think that is the other connector up by the trans dipstick, but you should know which it is if you just replaced it...duh!
1998 has (2) VSS.

ok so tested the NSS continuity looks good according to manuals.
Tested the solenoids all three read good according to manual.
So what I have decided to do,
Called the local trans shop and talked to him on the phone and he still says by what it sounds like is a lock-up solenoid.
He suggested I bring it by the shop tomorrow and he had a tester that can plug in and test the solenoids and sensor and such for free
He has a good reputation in town so I assume he knows what he is talking about. Also he said if its something simple as a sensor he would show me where its at let me put it on in his shop on the rack so I don't have to climb under it at the house. sounds like a deal to me lol. well thats where I am at on the transmission. If I ever figure out what has caused this problem I will let everyone know.

well he isn't a friend at all. He is just a really nice guy. I guess thats just the luxury of small town usa. and yeah I am going to have to find a way to pay him back somehow beyond the this guy is a good guy take your trans problems to him. anyways I will let everyone know what I find out.
Are threads like this ever deleted?
I'm doing what I can to search and learn what I can for my own transmission issue.
This thread sounded like it could be identical to my problem, but with no resolution reported back it is kind of worthless. Info on testing solenoids, and NSS is available elsewhere.
Sorry, but all this is aggravating.
