whats up everyone i got a 88 xj 4x4 with a AW4 transmission. the trans went out when i got it so i got one from a friend and put it in and drove it down the street and it wouldnt shift from 1st gear. so i unhooked the tcm under the dash and shift it manually and it shifts and drives great. so i was told it could be the tcm or the tps. so i got another tcm and pluged it in and it still wouldnt shift from 1st. i tryed to adjust my tps and it was bad so i got another one and adjusted it to the specs andpluged the tcm in and it still wouldnt shift from 1st. im geting tired of having to drive my automatic as a manual. please help me if anyone has any ideas what it could be. thanks everyone

Did you make sure to remove the negative cable from the battery bafore you disconnect and or connect the tcm and tps? The jeep will freak if you dont. Reset the system. Always remove the neg cable first and put it on last.

Servos in the tranny are probably bad if it won't shift under normal conditions

 

what servos? could the valve body be bad? i was told that everything in the trans is good cuz when i shift it manually it shifts perfect. also theres a hesitation when i accelerate from an idol. could that have something to do with the trans not working properly? i have alot of knoledge with car and i cant figure out this damn jeep.

 

has anyone ever had this problem and has any ideas what it could be.

 

there is an inline fuse in the tcm harness right before it plugs into the tcm. check that. i think it's 20a.

 

I dont mess with auto trans but what about the neutral safety switch not being set right. Have you checked to see _ when it is in the grears if you get power to the trans? like jack it up and put the axle on good jack stands and have a some one help you check it. BE safe and smart about it
