Transmission Question
So going down the highway today running about 65 mph, my transmission (so i think) decided to take a crap on me. I hear a metal ping noise and lose all forward power, and when I put the jeep in park it grinds. Thus, I am in need of a transmission or rebuild.
I know a guy with a wrecked 2000 XJ and he said he would sell me the transmission cheap, so my question is to make sure that that one will fit in my 96. I am pretty sure they are the same, but I wanted to double check.
thanks

I believe both must be either 2WD or 4WD......tail shafts r different between 2WD and 4WD. There may other differences as well.....others will chime in.

Nope. In 1998 the AW4 changed a fair bit. You need a '98-'01 transmission of the same type (2WD/4WD)
(Assuming you have a 4.0L with AW4 automatic, you didn'y give us any details really)

I am a little late in updatting this thread. Jeep has been fixed for a few weeks now.
Turns out it was the transfer case. Apparently, when I put the lift on and my SYE kit, I clipped an o-ring. Been leaking oil ever since. Took it about 8000 miles to do so, but ended up blowing the yoke out the back. Rookie mistake.
All good now though! thanks for all the help
