Transmission Problems..Help!!
So I've recently noticed a thump coming from the floor board.. It got worse pretty quick and started to sound like a rod knocking...
I figured it was just the 4 torque converter bolts coming loose, so I took it apart and checked. All of them are quite tight, and when I turned it over to a certain point I heard a pretty bad grinding/knocking noise..
Any help would be appreciated!! Really don't want to waste money at a transmission shop, so if I can fix it myself I would rather do that!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I had the same sound and found out it was the transfer case linkage was loose and hitting the floor when the engine shook on start up and shut down. Just goes to show that it might be simple than u think. Jeeps are all about playing "find the noise" lol. Crawl under it while it's running and find exactly where it's coming from first

Pretty common for the rubber on the trans. crossmember to wear out causing thumps. Its gonna take some crawling around underneath to find the noise. Most noises in a XJ are factory installed. lol

It's a 4WD Auto? (it's always a good idea to post what you have).
"when I turned it over to a certain point I heard a pretty bad grinding/knocking noise"
How where you turning it over? If you put it in neutral and wiggle the drive-line is there play in the U-Joint(s).
Has the starter been messed with lately?

yes, 4wd auto with a 242 tc.. I turned it over so I could access the 4 torque converter bolts right behind the oil pan. no the starter hadn't been messed with, could that be a problem? when I turned it off today, it seemed like maybe the starter was sticking
