Default Transmission problems

I have an automatic transmission on my 2001 xj, and i was driving home tonight and for 2.5 miles it wouldnt shift up into 2nd gear. i was going 20 and hitting 3200 revs. so i slowed down and went the whole way home at 15 @ 1800...

Finally in the last .5 miles, it shifted up 3 different times.

what could be the problem? the fluid looks great, and is still red, and i didnt do anything to my jeep today other than wash the mud off everything including the engine... could i have gotten some electricle component wet???

thanks for the help

The awesome thing here is you figured it out and didn't bother to tell anybody what it was. Admit stupidity and then don't say what it was. Guarantee you someone else, including me, will do something stupid and overlook something.

its been conking alot latley when the engine is cold, but running and shifting fine when warm

i still havent done anything about the TPS, do yall still think this is the problem?

another thing it does is everytime i let off the gas when its cold, it the revs will drop way down to like 200 then either conk or go back up to about 800
