Transmission problems
1987 4 wheel drive 4.0. Drives like normal until transmission fluid warms up then while in drive step on gas it just creeps while slipping. Every other gear works like normal, only drive is affected. Past 30 mph is fine. Fluid level is correct. I have no idea if it has ever been serviced. 348,000. What could be the issue?

Heh. Sounds like mine. Life is good until you have been on the road a while, and then you are in trouble. I once was meeting a business associate in downtown D.C. and had to park in an underground garage. I couldn't get out of the garage. Had to wait a while for it to cool down, then I was okay. By the time I got home, I wasn't sure I was going to make it home.
A complete fluid change did the trick and I put another 50k trouble-free miles on it before wrecking that Jeep.
For the how-to, see my sig, #3, or here, as provided by a retired Ford transmission engineer, Mark Kovalsky. Yes, it's for a Ford, but the steps are almost the same. The only difference is, the AW4 has no real filter, so there's no real reason to drop the pan,. Just do the flush.

For an XJ with 348K and no idea of how it's been maintained....regardless that the level is correct, it's time to service that transmission with fresh fluid. Dex/Merc compatible, not ATF+4. Gotta start with the basics and simple stuff first.
