transmission problem, jeep newbie, please help

transmission problem, jeep newbie, please help
hello,
i'm new to this forum, and i am new jeep owner, i recently purchase a
1997 jeep cherokee sport, auto, 4.0L! the engine light recently came on, being 3 tranny codes!
#1 P0700 (malfunction)
#2 P0705
#3 P0705
when i clear the engine light fourth gear works, when the engine light comes back on i loose 4th gear and only have 1,2,3! also the reverse lights do not operate! in my experience usually the no reverse lights is a neutral safety switch! the transmission shifts fine and does not bang into gear, tranny fluid is good and does not smell horrible!
any replys, help will be great thanks!
