Transmission problem, got way worse..
Need a little help identifying what could be going wrong in my transmission, here's what happened:
(1990 4.0 auto) (Has been having a little problem shifting into high gear lately)
Yesterday morning: replaced my serp. belt and alternator
Yesterday afternoon: Driving up a hill when my transmission seemed to slip, engine was still at 3k rpm but i started rolling down the hill. I stopped, turned the jeep off, restarted it and put it in low gear, it crawled up the hill at very high rpm.
I then decided to drive it back home, as I'm going along the road it loses power to the wheels again this time while I was in 3rd. I pulled over and looked underneath, the jeep was leaking out trans fluid pretty badly. I was able to limp it home in low gear taking breaks to stop and make sure there was still some fluid in the trans.
Any ideas? Does it need a rebuild? I'm planning to take it into the shop tomorrow but my trans knowledge is very limited and I don't want to get jipped.
Thanks in advance

Where is the fluid coming from? It could be malfunctioning, Just due to the fluid loss. Say a cracked hose or fitting. Could be input or output seals. All that good, could be something inside. Fixing the tranny won't be cheap. You could get a tranny at a Junkyard for cheap, but no guaranty it works.

Not sure where the leak is, it seemed to be dripping down from where the engine and trans connect but I couldn't really tell

Well then its time too clean things up underthere and take a real good look. Could be a bad input seal or the lines going to the radiator/cooler or out the dipstick. Be a very good idea to know that for sure. the source of the leak will help determine the repair and whether or not you could DIY, and save a lot of money. Would really suck to pay a shop $200-300 to replace $40 worth of hoses.

Yeah for sure, I think it has to be something inside since it was acting strange even before the leak.. which sucks. But I will definitely try to locate the exact source of the leak when I get off work.

Yeah the an internal issue could be causing the fluid to pour out. But, I, would want to be absolutly sure, before I paid to have my trans fixed. It is possible the leak came first, just that you didn't notice it till you had other issues. I hope it minor problem like a hose.
