Question 2001 xj center console removal... HELP!!

Hey jeep fans. I've been working on my new XJ, and I'm running out of patience on the center console. I'm wanting to RHINO the floor and I'm hung up on trying to get the damn console out. It's long and I've removed all the screws holding it in. I have to try to get it out around the shifter, the 4 WD lever and the emergency brake.

I don't want to break it, but I'm getting to that point.

I must be losing it..

thanks in advance
Aaron

I'm sure it's not much different than my 1996 console, which I removed a few weeks ago. First off, you could try putting the 4WD lever into 4LO and the Shifter into 1-2 if it's an auto or 4th if it's a manual. Then put the e-brake up and you should be able to shimmy it out. That's how I got mine out. I had to lift the rear of the console all the way to the roof and slide it back while shimmying it around to make it past all the levers. Good luck.

I agree with cherokee113- pull the 4wd shifter into 4l and pull the ebrake up. Both shifter's covers pull off (access to backlighting) which makes the openings bigger. If you have to, the T handle on the transmission shifter pulls straight off (presuming you have the AW4). You should be able to wiggle the console off from there. Since you are treating the floor, removing the seats will buy you some more room. While you have the carpet out a suggestion would be to replace the 4wd shifter bushings if you have a rattle (as most XJs do). The bushing set is $30 and requires the carpet to be pulled back. With the carpet out, this is a no brainer.

It always made me nervous using a flat screwdriver to remove dash trim. The trim can crack or holes can be punched in the dash material. With this bezel, just slide your hands down both sides to the very bottom corners. Gently pull these corners away from the dash and it will pop off without the use of tools.
