Default Transmission Problem

I have a 1992 Cherokee 4x4, 4.0L, bought new in 1992, now has 134k miles. Never had transmillion problems until now. Replaced transmission fluid and filter last year. Now, when putting it into drive it does not move forward. First indication was a mile from my house after a trip into town, while in drive the transmission simply stopped working, like I just bumped it into nuteral, where the engine would increase, but I was coasting to a stop. Made it to my driveway, let it cool for a few hours, then after starting was able to move it 20 feet then it did it again. A couple hours later I started it again and was able to park it in the garage again only for it to happen again. Checking the transmission fluid level, it was a little over served, but was still pink from last years replacement. I will remove some fluid and see if that fixes the problem, but won't know for sure until then. The jeep is still like new and have never gone 4-wheeling, other than taking a trailer to a landfill full of branches that have brokeken off my many trees, and that's it. All other times it's only seen highway miles. Do you think my problem is an overservice problem, or it the trans shot, with 138K miles?

Did you check the transmission fluid with the engine running and in park or neutral?
It sounds like an underfill problem but thats what i would start with.

I don't know what you think you are doing, but it's extremely rude. You just hijacked someone else's thread and you are littering the forum with garbage posts.

Looks like Willy55 cleaned it up. Dunno what that guy was up to....

Anyway, back to the transmission problem for this fine new member!

Because of the mess that was here, I PMd the OP to ask a few questions, and he reported that his fluid is cherry red and there were no symptoms leading up to the failure.

Sudden failures are rare, but they do happen. I suggested he drain some fluid into a clean container and check for metal in the trans fluid.

m1992, have you had time to try that yet? It would be useful to know.

Transmissions aren't my strong point, so lets see what others have to say.
