Transmission Not shifting
Hello new to the forum and have been searching for awhile, maybe I am just not searching with the right terms. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
I recently purchased a 98 Sport w/140000 miles 4.5 lift 33/12.5/15 with a t-case drop. When I purchased it, it had a check engine light which was cylinder #1 misfire. I replaced spark plugs and re-gapped them to the correct gaps.
When I first got it I had to shift from 1/2 to 3 then into drive. I decided to replace all 3 trans solenoids with new ones and replaced the internal filter. After I did this I took it for a test drive and found out D worked fine to start out but now I had no 2nd gear.
I thought maybe I needed to drive it a little and it would start working. Well about 2 hours of driving around on and off road I lost 1st gear and gained 2nd again. Found this to be odd since the solenoids should not operate in this way. It has been 2 weeks since I changed these and yesterday afternoon when I was ohmed the solenoids and did some more test driving again I found out that I have no 1st and no 4th/OD. I also unplugged the TCM and drove it around and still no first gear.
I had the CEL checked and it was showing P0700 and P0751. Which is the solenoid C. I am kind of at a loss as to what to do. I replaced the transmission fluid with the merc/dex instead of ATF4.
I have adjusted the "TV/KickDown" cable twice thinking this maybe the problem. I am thinking there is multiple things wrong. IE solenoid C and maybe the transmission needs to be rebuilt. I am unsure....
I don't want to spend more money now than I have to. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had the same problem with a 2000 that I had a few years ago. After replacing the solenoids twice, a new torque converter and a new tcm, it still didn't work. Put a junk yard trans in, worked fine lol

bringing this up from the dead. I have the p0700 and p0751 in my built 98 sport (231tc aw4 auto trans. 4.10 gearing turning 37" tires. about to buy all 3 solenoids and filter after I do some ohm testing. sounds like many people replace the solenoids just to be let down and have no clue whats going on. Jeep just has trouble getting in/out of gears but still get to OD eventually and can hit 60mph. just trying to do work once. thanks yawl.

Regear would be the best option. If you are at 4.10 now you might need to look at 5.13's maybe. From the looks of your axles you should be able to find a set low enough to get you where you need. I'm sure there is a chart some where on tire size vs gear ratio.
I found this. http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=402

sounds good. found this link http://www.grimmjeeper.com/regearing_basics.html
did some math. 3.55 (original gearing) x 37 current tire size ÷ 27 by old tire size = 4.79 the gearing that will bring it closest to stock. says round up to nearing gear available. 4.88. thinking 5.13s might not be a bad idea once i get bumpers and lug some gear around. will definetlly look into rehearing if i haven't already destroyed tranny. ordered my solenoids so hopefully that does the trick. fingers crossed.
