Default Transmission Mount Doesnt Align with Crossmember

2001 XJ 4..0......I ;changed out the RMS yesterday and needed to raise the transmission to get the extra clearance to get the pan out. I removed the bolts from the crossmember to the trans mount and raised it from the xfer case with a floor jack and 2x4. Now the bolts in the mount are not lined up with the holes in the crossmount. The bolts are about a half inch to the aft of the holes on the crossmount.
My plan was to remove the crossmount and attach the mount bolts and then reattach the crossmember bolts but the crossmember bolts set first when I lower the transfer case. The mount bolts dont reach the holes....

Any ideas?

Had a similar issue when I swapped out my transfer case. I just bull-dogged the trans with feet, jacks, pry bars, etc until I got the bolts & holes in alignment. I did attached the cross member to trans first, then attached the cross member to the frame rails. The cross member provides a good handle to pull / push / pry.

Where on the transmission do you put the pry bar?

I used a come-a-long. Get creative. The entire engine/transmission is held in place by rubber which shifts really easily when one of the mounts is disconnected. You just have to shift it back.

My first guess is the motor mounts are shot and the whole thing shifted. Sometimes this kinda thing can be quite the pain in the *** to realign.

On a related note... never ever remove both engine mounts at the same time. You will have a nightmare getting all the bolts lined up again lol

are you sure it isnt fitted back- to- front ?

there is 2 ways you can mount them, and it makes a difference

just in case you didnt notice, its reasonably obvious...but when there is 2 ways....

Thanks for the replies....I was able to get it back in. Loosened the two transmission mount bolts. I then had the play to move the studs into position and lowered the transmission down. I put the 4 nuts on the mount studs and tightened them as much as I could....Did the crossbar bolts next and then lowered the transmission all the way down. Tightened all 8 bolts to 40ish pounds. I used a open ended wrench to get the 2 transmission mount bolts. Took a while because of the tight space, but it worked! Didnt have to do any pry barring or cargo strappen.

just a word of warning, if you are referring to the 2 x 18mm bolts that attach the mount into the trans

these need to be tight, preferably with blue loctite..like original

I had one work loose and drop out entirely, damaging the female thread in the trans slightly

Thanks for the heads up....I am going to change the mount in a few weeks (it's the stock mount and pretty beat up), so i'll tighten her/loctite when i knock that out. Are you talking 80 ft pounds tight?

more like 50-60ftlb, looking at the FSM for bellhousing bolts, coarse thread into alloy, there is online generic tables you can double check for thread size & type etc

I think the main thing is loctite. Nearly every bolt on the auto is factory loctite, clearly a reason behind that

Someone added an extra 0 on the order form, they had to get rid of it somehow
