Transmission Issue!
All, my 97 XJ Sport w/ aW4 tranny has let me down yet again. This time while driving to work, at any one point in time it will stop shifting into OD. Doesnt seem to be consistant nor hot/ cold specific. Fluid level is good. It will continue to do it no matter what I do ie: stop and go, manually shift it...ect. It will only shift appropriatly once I have turned the vehicle off and let it sit for some time. I replaced the shift solonoids (all 3) approx 1 month ago as it would not down shift into the appropriate gear when coming to a stop. I could manually do it, it would not do it on it's own. The CEL came on and showed the appropriate code for shift solonoid failure. This time the CEL comes on and tells me P0700 which I read is a generic code relating to the Transmission Control Module/ Unit. I have an appt for it tomorow since this seems to be out of my league. If anyone has ANY suggestions or personnel experience with this, please comment or PM me. Thanks again for everyones help!!

lots of threads about AW4 trans issues
kickdown cable adjusted?
proper amount and variety of fluid?
tested the throttle position sensor voltages? TPS
tested the neutral safety switch? NSS
other items in play are the vehicle speed sensor VSS, the brake pedal switch, and the trans control unit TCU
Is it not going into 4th or not going into lockup? Electronic shifting 1-2-3-4 is via combinations of the S1 S2 solenoids on/off. If it shifts 1-2-3, both of the shift solenoids are working. S3 is the lockup solenoid and can be disabled by the brake pedal switch. The NSS has also been found to be the culprit for lack of lockup.
This could be as simple as chafed wiring causing an intermittent short. The AW4 diagnosis manual will enable you to locate the fault. PM me your email address for the manual.

Well I went to AAMCO today and found out an old buddy of mine is the service manager there. He scanned my rig and it brought up a code for the lock up solonoid or the trans comtrol module. Since I just replaced ALL of the solonoids, Im guessing it's TCM. I am getting one from a JY tomorrow for 75 bucks. Warrentied for 90 days. We shall see what happens! I will deff let you all know!
As for the check list provided by excess650: Kick down cable is good, fluid and filter is good and TPS is newer. How would one test the NSS and where is the VSS and brake switch located?
Thanks! LCFRJEEP

brake switch is above the brake pedal
VSS is on the tailhousing of the trans
NSS harness has a connector near the trans dipstick tube. The 7 pin is for the trans, and the other is for the NSS. Unplug it and use a VOM set for resistance and follow the instructions in the manual. It will tell you specifically which pins should have continuity (or not) when in P-R-N-D-3-1/2
Likewise, check the male 7 pin to TCU cable and make sure there are not any open wires. The pinouts are in the manual.
You might want to call your Jeep dealer and see if that TCU needs to be flashed for your year vehicle. '96 and earlier don't.

Well I bought the JY TCM for $75. Installed and test drove almost 15 miles. The CEL went off and it shifted through all gears wonderfully. I hope that is the end to that mess! Now on the the other projects! Someone once told me JEEP stood for Just Empty Every Pocket. They were not kidding but I wouldnt have it any other way! Thanks for all your help!

For future reference, when my buddy scanned my rig at AAMCO, he got code P1898 if Im not mistaken, which is related to the lock up solonoid and or the TCM failure.

Well, after driving 50+ miles w/o issue, the trans dropped OD yet again. The CEL came back on this evening and it is now sitting at my local AAMCO. I dont have the time right now to self-diagnose. I will let everyone know what happens. Unbelievable.

Well after scanning and driving and scanning, nothing was found wrong with my rig. I picked it up and could instantly tell I still was without OD. I brought it back and took the service manager for a ride and showed him how high my RPM's were at cruizing speed (78mph). I told him it's like Im running 4.10's now! No CEL right now but im sure that will change. They cleared and flashed the new TCM and still nothing. Knew I should have bought a 5spd XJ! Damn it!
