I'm a newbie so go easy on me guys. I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee. When I start it first thing in the morning & get on the highway driving at 65 mph my rpms are at 3k. I thought that was a little high so I pulled over, shut the vehicle off, started it back up, sat for a second and then started driving again. When I hit 65 mph my rpms were hovering just above 2k. I have gotten into the habit of starting my Jeep twice a morning. Any thoughts?

 

Sounds more like a vacume or intake issue

 

sounds like the lock out isn't working properly. When was the last time the fluid and filter were changed.
I had a problem with my tranny that it was starting out in 3rd gear but, also the overdrive lock out wasn't engaging. I had to change the shift solenoids in the transmission and it works perfect now.
You can take it to a local parts store that will pull your fault codes and you can go from there.

 

don't think the fluid & filter have been changed for a while. I was experimenting with my driving on the way home & I think the problem is that when I drive off of the first start of the day the Jeep isn't shifting into 4th gear. I find it a little odd though that just by shutting it off & restarting it that the problem goes away. I will change the filter & fluid & see if that helps. Thanks Guys.

 

I agree but, I have heard that at times a simple fluid change fixes the problem. What I did was change the fluid and filter since I was told that the vehicle had been sitting for 8 months before I bought it, I then drained the fluid and replaced. I also got replacement shift solenoids pulled the pan and replaced all the shift solenoids and the filter and fluid again. figured at that point I should have pretty much flushed out most of the old fluid and have a new filter. Of course I did put a few hundred miles on it between each fluid change and service. I found the shift solenoids for just under $200 for all 3.

 

I recently bought a 95 cherokee and it is slightly leaking transmission fliud, but my concern is when I accelerate in reverse, not drive, it turns off. I can't put the handle in reverse, because the engine inmediately turns off. Can you give me an idea about this problem? Today I changed the mass sensor but the fault wasn't corrected and everybody tells me that is not a transmission problem. Need help!

 

Thanks for the info. I will definitely change the fluid & filter this weekend & check out the solenoids.
