Hello, FNG here...

So, the transfer case in my 89 XJ cratered. Trying to find a used replacement. The transfer case I pulled out says it's a 231AMC build # 8953004301 w/ 272 gear ratio.

Having a very hard time finding this exact part. Most of the lookup tools require you tell it whether you have the Peugeot BA 10 or the Aisin Ax. How to tell? Yes, I have a the manual, it shows the different transmission options, but not HOW to tell which one you have? Used the search tool, found some threads talking how the Aisin has a tag. Found the tag on the passenger side of the transmission but it's NOT the Aisin looking tag? Just plain generic tag with a date at the top, another number in the middle and what looks like a serial number below. (tried to take picture but it was not readable...)

How do I tell which transmission I have? does it matter if it's the exact same part transfer case? i.e. was this transfer case mated with both transmissions?

Easy as pie. The Peugeot has a seam in it lengthwise.

Does anyone know if they used the 231AMC on both the Peugeot and Aisin please? i.e. Do they both mount up the same and are interchangeable?

I ask this because most of the online look-ups, don't seem to differentiate between the two... i.e. I've found a few 231AMC's after calling from both
listings under Aisin and Peugeot.

 

Mine had a 231 with the ba/10 but was 21 spline not 23.

 

My 231 is a 21 tooth as well, gotta crawl back under there to see if it has a seam or not...
