Transmission Flush

Default Transmission Flush

On my 1998 Cherokee sport 4.0 with 175,000 miles I would like to do a transmission flush but I was wondering if while I had the pan off if it would be a good idea to install an A340 AW4 transmission solenoid kit? Is this the transmission in my jeep?

Yeah the A340 parts are gonna work in the AW4. What kinda problems are you having that make you want to get the solenoid kit?

Yes, you have the AW4 transmission. The solenoid kit is not cheap, it it's not broke don't fix it.

I`m not having problems yet but wanted to do some preventative maintenance. What is a build out sheet?

The sheet from the factory that lists all of the equipment and options your Jeep came with. Don't worry about it, you have the AW4. The solenoid kit will cost you almost 300 bucks. Like I said before, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Drain the fluid via the drain plug. Refill with Dexron/Mercon fluid to the level specified, using the directions on the dipstick.

If you are not have any shifting problems why would you want to mess with them? The solenoids are not a preventative maintenance. Plus I have seen may people buy some off brand solenoids and have more problems then that started with. If you insist on changing them out get OEM ones.

found a solenoid kit on ebay for 60 bucks. Transmission is leaking a bit around the gasket so seems like I need to drop the pan and at least change the filter? Is a filter change a good idea?

It's really just a screen and not a filter. But if you have to pull the pan....

You're just dying to put solenoids in, so go ahead. Even though the originals are probably better at their age than some cheasy new replacements may be.

Never trust the eBay crap. You should really only use MOPAR parts when it comes to something critical like shift solenoids.

If you are that desperate to change them out get the OEM one and not something that you will have to change out in a couple of months. That is if you are lucky enough for them to last that long.

Never replaced one in my 27 years of dealing with the AW4, but who cares about that?

I've replaced one set out of a fleet of 200 XJs.
