Default Transmission fluid type

I have a 96 sport 4.0 and my transmission fluid I think is low. What type of fluid should I use? And what are the steps in a Cherokee to check the level?

All of it wont drain out... measure what drains out and put that amount in. Easiest way... do a couple more drain and refill's over the next 1000 miles and you should be good.

Make sure the transmission is nice and warmed up too before testing the levels...otherwise it wouldn't give you an accurate reading.

Use Dex/Merc III "compatible". Widely available.

Do NOT use ATF+4, no matter what they might tell you at the parts store. Chrysler issued a bulletin a while back stating that ATF+4 is fine for the AW4 transmission.

The truth is that some with the AW4 do not do well with this fluid; they experience "slippage".

Nobody has issues with Dex/Merc, which is the fluid recommended by the manufacturer of the transmission.

So don't mess with it. Why in the world would you take the chance when reasonable interval changes of Dex/Merc have stood the test of time in getting 200K-300k out of the AW4 transmission. Go Dex/Merc compatible and rest easy.

Drain it. Add 3.8 quarts and then check per instructions on dipstick.

Specs (per FSM, except when they're known to be wrong) and capacities are listed on my site - www.kelleyswip.com/tech.html, and follow the links.

Check fluid with transmission at operating temperature, sitting on level ground, engine idling, in Park.

I always use Dexron 3. DO NOT use ATF4. ATF4 is known to mess up AW4s
Drain 3 quarts from the pan and fill it with 3 quarts.
Run the transmission around to get it hot then check the level of the fluid with the transmission in gear and the e-brake on.
