Default Transmission fluid

I have a 1998 Jeep cherokee 4.0L with the auto tranny, and I've already changed the tranny fluid once but I can't remember what I used, I've been looking around and I can't find a straight answer on what type of fluid to use, some people say dex3 but supposedly there's some service bulletin Chrysler released that said to use ATF+4 in the aw4 which is the transmission I'm assuming that I have in my jeep, so should the question is what type of fluid is best for my transmission, ATF+4, dex3, or what?

Correct, you have an AW4. These are pretty much the same transmission as the Toyota A340H. Chrysler stopped carrying the GM lubricant because A) the license ran out of the trademark B) AW4s are no longer under any drivetrain warranty, C) they didn't want to pay a competitor anymore, and D) all supported vehicles use Chrysler fluid anyway.

Dexron III is the only stuff the manufacturer has ever recommended and the only guaranteed performing fluid. It's also dirt cheap. These days you'll find it labelled as "D/M". There's about 4 liters in the transmission itself and 4 more hiding in the rest of the system (cooler, torque converter, lines, etc). It will take a few drain-and-fills to get the fluid completely changed.

Dex 3. There have been reports of aw4s slipping after putting ATF in them. I have always used dex 3 for drain and fills and at 189k my transmission still shifts like it's new.

My owners manual says Dextron III.

Could be, depends on how old it is. If it's super dark you may need to change it more than that.
