I believe the P0705 refers to the range selector switch, also know as the NSS, neutral safety switch.....and can be cleaned in many cases and be reused, or replace it...there are many threads on here that discuss this in greater detail
P0705 is coming from from the NSS. The P0700 is a generic transmission code that is just to let you know the TCM has detected a fault (P0705). Take care of that and the P0700 should disappear with it. Start with these.

You might want to try cleaning it, it doesn't look so hard an new ones are kinda expensive.

In the process of doing that now. No backup lights and sometimes no start. Also sometimes won't stay in 4th gear. Figured I'd give cleaning it a try first. If that doesn't work, Cascade Transmissions has them for $65.
Cleaning the NSS seems to have worked. Transmission shifts as it should now. Guess I have to drive it some more to get rid of the stored code. Then off to have it inspected. I even have backup lights now. They haven't worked since I've had the jeep. Thanks guys!!!

Hi Guys,
My 98 sport is also giving me a PO705 & a PO700 and I also do not have back up lights but everything else seems to work fine, starting, shifting, etc. I haven't possibly got in in me to remove and clean and reinstall the switch so I started doing some pricing for a replacement. What I don't understand is how they can range from $ 50.00 to almost
$400.00. I understand about imports and re-mans but these are being sold as new units to fit my 98. Why on earth would there be such a variance on price. I never buy the cheapest and never buy the best but where and why is there such a massive line drawn and what should I consider here?
Thanks for any help.

Why exactly can you not possibly clean it? If you can swap in a new one you can certainly clean the one you have...... Or do you plan to pay for the install??? If so it would still be cheaper to pay to have it cleaned.
Prices vary because of manufacture. An OEM unit will command a higher price than say a Chinese knock off etc

I have 3 herniated discs in my neck, 3 in my lower back, at 62 I'm not getting any fusions 1 knee replaced and the other on the way. My fingers are all crooked and bent from RA. If I get it up on stands I can probably replace it with a new one. If I try to count on removing and cleaning the old one and can't get it done, I'm s*****D The Bleep Jeep vid showed a lot of reaching up the bell housing to cut ties and if I have to I'll just re route the wires to existing connector. I can only work like that for a little bit and may pay for it for a couple of days after. Then I will clean and save the original for a spare if possible. It's tough gettin old, Im payin now for a lot of fun I wouldn't trade for anything!
