transmission clunk at stopping
I a novice and have just brought a used 2001 XJ Cherokee Classic. We want it for beach use here in SE Queensland. I have already bogged it in soft sand and had to be snatched out so still learning.
It seems OK overall. However at the point of stopping the transmission makes a distinct clunk and it feels like something loose or worn. Is this anything to be concerned about as the transmission is smooth otherwise? I am also having trouble shifting from 4WD to 2WD and would appreciate any tips.
Thanks

If you haven't fixed it yet....I had a clunk when coming to a stop. I took the rear drive shaft out and lubed the spline going into the transfer case. This took care of the clunk when coming to a stop.

Try what previous poster said about DS also it could be brakes hanging. When you drive through sand let the tire PSI down to around 15 PSI and you should have no problems.
Adjusting the 4wd shifter is simple ..also spray it with WD 40 or PB Buster. I sent you a PM that may help with the adjustment...Tj
Thanks to everyone who replied. Easyduzit got it right - lubed the spline and no further worries. No more beach sand bogging either and have caught some decent fish at North Stradbroke Island just before the dawn. Why didn't I get one of these years ago!
