Default Transmission acting up need help

OK so I got a 98 cherokee xj Auto tranny and recently the transmission started acting up out of no where. What happens is either sometimes it wont shift until i hit up 3k rpm. This is say from a dead stop i start moving and i gotta hit 3k or lil above and let of the gas pedal for it to shift.

Sometimes it shifts fine and sometimes it feels like it shifts past 3rd gear as I can have the throttle pressed down on max and it will slowly pick up speed. If i manually shift it into 3 it goes.

I read that it could be the neutral safety switch? Also i guess the jeep is suppose to start in park and in neutral but in neutral mine wont start.

Just seeing if anyone has advice as to what to check first. Thanks.

Im getting the generic transmission code i think it was p0700, some people said that the TPS might need to be changed but would that cause this code to show up?

Have you checked the fluid level & condition, adjusted the TV cable and checked the wire harness?
You can test the TPS as well as the NSS a lot easier than just throwing a bunch of random parts at it.

yes fluid checked that was the first thing i did, and its good.

TV cable i checked too and noticed that the button feels like it stuck in the pushed in position as i can slide the plastic tube in and out with out even pressing the button... idk if that might be causing and issue or not.

TPS i replaced as i also have a P0302 code misfire in cyl 2 which i guess the TPS can cause this so figured id give it a try considering i already did compression testing and it turned out good.

which wire harness should i check? How can i test the NSS? I read somewhere u can bypass the NSS maybe i can try that and see if it shifts.

Also went out for a drive after reading that in 1-2 the tranny will shift into 2nd at 4 -4500rpms so I kept it in 1-2 and tried it and it does not shift. I guess its the 2nd gear that its skipping.

Seems like 1 - 3 - 4 are working and 2nd is sleeping on the job lol

but 3rd i have to manually shift it in there otherwise i feel like its goes from 1 to 4 as i have no power and takes forever to get up to speed unless i shift it into 3rd manually.

That's a red flag right there, if the cable adjuster is broken it will never operate correctly.

interesting could that maybe effect cruise control? I noticed it stopped working a while back out of no where.

Gona have to replace it or fix it and hopefully that fixes the tranny issue. I think il go to a shop and see if they can read the code from the tcm to narrow the problem down.
