details on the jeep to help decide:
any new replacements? year? mileage? etc...

Personally, if it acceptable year/mileage and have a few new parts - i would go down to the yard, pay $200 and get another one - pick-n-pull has warranty on their stuff - gauranteed to work when you pull it or they exhancge it/refund it
or take it to ammco transmission and pay $2500 installed for a 2 year warranty

I'm having a pump going out on my gf 96. When you shift it into gear nothing happens, then finally it slams into gear and then your off with the trans not wanting to upshift.

I'm pretty sure the pump is inside the trans and best bet would be a junkyard one

You could just have a bad torque convertor. Most of the time at least in my experience pumps will start to whine when they are going bad. I am no expert on transmissions though.
