Transfercase swap?

Transfercase swap?
I recently destroyed my tc it was a 242... I was told I can possibly throw a 231 in. But I am not quiet sure it will work and I don't wanna waste the money and it go to hell. I was also told the driveshafts might be different as well (length wise)
Can anyone give me any enlightenment on this because I am confused -_-

Engine: I6 4.0
As far as i know in between 93 they switched from 21 splin input to 23 spline input so anything after that year youd have to match and a 231 will bolt up in place of a 242
